Top Tips for Christmas Photos

Now December's finally here and there's a dusting of white on the very tops of the mountains, I can at last acknowledge that it's THAT time of year. Yes, the fat man in the red suit will soon be making his rounds and turkeys are beginning to look nervous.

Christmas, maybe more so than any other time of year, means lots and lots of photographs will be taken. Kids opening presents, mum in her posh frock, grandad asleep in the big chair after the Queen's speech, dad monopolising the new Scalextric (or maybe that was just at my house?), and lots of other memorable moments you'll want to keep forever.

These days, everyone has a digital camera on their phone or a little point-and-shoot always to hand, so I thought I'd share a few "Top Tips" to help make your Christmas photos really special this year.

1. Children
Let's face it, when there are kids in the house Christmas is all about them, and of course you want photos of them to share with the rest of the family. The golden rule when photographing children - especially your own! - is never, ever tell them to smile (unless you're exceptionally lucky and your offspring are unusually accommodating). The best you're likely to get when shouting "Smile!" and pointing a camera at them is a general display of teeth.
Much better to engage the child by either saying or doing something silly to get their attention and making them laugh genuinely, or simply talk to them about something that interests and excites them (like the new remote control car they've just torn the wrappings from) and act like the camera isn't even switched on.

2. Don't pose it
Christmas morning is just magical, you don't need to stage it to capture wonderful present-opening photos. Just pay careful attention to what is in your shot and don't try to cram in too much or your shot loses impact. Zoom in close on faces as presents are unwrapped - often children will hold their new acquisitions up for inspection and admiration so anticipate the moment they turn towards you to show you their new toy or game and be ready with the shutter. Include your tree or decorations in some shots to 'set the scene' but don't overcrowd the image. Candid shots of the children playing with their new toys (or reading their new books) are guaranteed to become favourites over and above the standard "grin at the camera" snaps.

3. The grown ups
Adults hate having their photo taken as a general rule, and people can feel embarrassed in front of a camera. Avoid asking anyone to "say cheese" unless you want pictures of people cringing.
The best shots are the ones where the subject didn't realise the camera was there, so if you have a good zoom lens, use it to capture people in conversation, or just sitting in the living room together. Natural makes the best, and most "real", photo memories!

4. Ladies
Us girls do sometimes like to put on a posh frock, and for some of us it's a once-a-year event! When you're photographing mum in her swish new Karen Millen, have her turn very slightly away from the camera and look back - this slims her figure and adds grace. Make sure her back is straight but her shoulders are relaxed. Never shoot upwards as this can be very unflattering, best to angle the camera downwards slightly towards her face, which slims the jaw and chin and makes eyes appear larger. Don't mention smiling and there should be absolutely no reference to dairy products. Just tell her she looks great and you'll get a lovely natural smile (if she's anything like my mum, anyway!)

5. Flash
Sometimes it can't be helped - you're photographing indoors in winter and it's just not light enough to shoot steadily without flash. Wherever possible though, avoid using direct flash when you're photographing faces - it's very harsh and unflattering and will show up every line and imperfection. Grandma won't thank you for that.

6. Experiment
We photographers have accepted that the days of film have joined leg warmers, bell bottoms and the mighty Ford Capri as a fond and distant memory. The up-side of that, though, is that photographs are now so cheap to produce that it's possible to shoot loads and loads of images until we get one we like, without worrying about the time and cost of developing. So if your camera is a sophisticated one with different modes and settings, play around with them and see what effects you can produce with the different options. For example, try out some candlelight shots. Takes a bit of practice but the results can be really striking.

7. Details
A little attention to detail can really enhance an album and help to tell a story through images. Take a few extra images showing your table centrepiece, your decorations, even the food you serve - it can really add colour and interest to your Christmas photo collection.

8. Don't lose focus
The key to smooth photo-storytelling is in organisation. Make sure you're familiar with your camera and its settings and that you have plenty of spare, charged batteries to avoid any faff on Christmas day. Check that your lens is clean, and that you have film or a memory card in there before you start shooting (oh yes, it happens!) Make sure you're shooting at a high enough resolution to make decent sized prints - many new digital cameras have a small file setting which is just big enough for web use, and it would be a real shame to take that masterpiece on a low-res setting (yep, that happens too!)

9. Shoot what you see
You're behind the camera so you're telling the story as you see it. Don't just take the snaps that you think are expected. Document the things that trigger a response or an emotion. One of my favourite photos from my childhood is of my Grandad and my sister just sitting dozily on the sofa together on Boxing Day. It'll never win any awards, but to me it's incredibly poignant as it epitomises a happy childhood memory. Enjoy yourself and shoot what's important to you. This is YOUR story, so tell it!

10. Print them!
It's so easy now to dump a memory card onto a computer's hard drive, maybe upload a few to FaceSpace or transfer some favourites to your phone. But one thing that I honestly believe will never be replaced is the family photo album. Seeing your images in front of you, as real, tangible photographs and presented mounted in a beautiful book, just cannot, as they say, be beat. Make the effort this year to get all your favourite shots nicely printed and display them as they were meant to be displayed. After all, if you've put all our "Top Tips" into practice you'll have some cracking images that deserve to be shown off!

Photography Training Course - Wedding Photography Workshop

On Sunday the first Wedding Photography Workshop took place in Halesowen, West Midlands.

All of the attendees had been on a previous photography business course with Sally Marie and were ready to tackle the practical side of photographing a wedding.

The day began with coffees and introductions and then into one of the training centre's purpose-built classrooms for some background theory on approaching a wedding, from sales and marketing through to posing, lighting and even image presentation. The morning was an intense, densely-packed information session and delegates were given a booklet of course notes to help with posing, essential shots and dealing with all the many elements that make up a wedding.

After a light lunch, the delegates changed into smart attire (in order to pose as extra guests for setting up authentic-looking group shots - the men even had buttonholes!) and we headed outside into the drizzle, armed with white brollies, cameras and a classic Jaguar decked out with wedding ribbons, to start the portfolio-building section of the day.

The rain was unforgiving, but our stunning model groom, Jack, and model bride Chloe in a fabulous vintage wedding dress and veil, braved the elements and posed patiently with our "chauffeur" for the delegates to pose them and get their shots.

As the rain clouds cleared we headed to the park for some scenic shots, beginning with group posing techniques.
After that the delegates were let loose on the very patient Chloe, in order to put into practice the techniques we'd covered in the morning's classroom session on bridal posing. The delegates concentrated on body angles, correct arms and hand positioning and interacting with the 'bride' to get the best from their shots.
Everyone was then set a "10 Shot Challenge" - where they were given a one or two-word title, such as "colour", "S Curve" or "posed hands" - and had to create just one shot for each heading. This helped them to get into the habit of thinking carefully about the composition, content, lighting and posing of their shot before firing the shutter.

Everyone did very well in the 10-Shot Challenge and it was clear that they were really putting attention to detail into making the shot perfect before pressing that shutter.

After a confetti session with some slightly over-enthusiastic confetti cannons, we set about finding interesting backgrounds around the parklands to add shape, colour and texture to our portraits.
The afternoon flew by and soon it was time to head back to the training centre for a last coffee, Q&A session and to re-cap what we'd learned. The delegates were then presented with framed certificates for their completion of the workshop.

Throughout the day we were all being discreetly filmed by Gwynplaine Media, and a short video from the day will be online soon, so watch this space!

The feedback from all of the delegates was phenomenal, and everyone wanted to know when the next course will be! So, we'll also be posting a diary of classes and workshops for 2012 very shortly.

Sam and Gareth Collect Their Jorgensen Wedding Album

Well, yesterday was a beautiful sunny day in Barmouth; the sky was blue and clear, the sea was sparkling, the sun was shining and the beautifully renovated studio was nice and cool (and well stocked with orange juice and champagne!)

It was an extra special day for Sam, who got married last year at Seiont Manor and came all the way from Yorkshire to collect her stunning Jorgensen wedding album.

She practically had to prise it out of my hands, it was such a work of beauty! Even the box was a piece of art in itself.

Sam and Gareth opted for a weighty 40-side album due to the number of pictures they chose, finished with classic gold metal corners.

The cover was off-white textured vinyl featuring an atmospheric shot, an unusual and very deliberate choice by the bride and groom, who wanted an image that was clearly theirs but didn't show their faces. They selected a close-up of the ring exchange, encapsulating Gareth's uniform and rank, Sam's dress and both rings, embossed in gold underneath the picture with their names and wedding date.

Inside, the images were double-matted, white on black pages, to give each picture definition and dimension. Whilst this is a fairly traditional presentation, it was given its own character with the use of quirky, computer-cut mounts, fusing tradition with contemporary character for a really unique look.

This stunning Jorgensen album simply breathes quality; the feel of the cover, the weight of the pages gives this sophisticated wedding album its chic, effortless class.

Wedding Photography Blog Series - Part 11: After the Honeymoon - Your Champagne Viewing Session

Once again, my apologies for the break in Blogs while the studio was undergoing renovation - we had a flood just before Christmas which, after a lot of drama and upheaval, now sees us back in a beautifully re-modelled studio and viewing/meeting space.

Which brings me nicely to the next part of the Wedding Blog Series - the viewing session! At Sally Marie Photography, every aspect of the wedding journey is part of our luxury experience, from the moment you first come to browse through our sample albums until... well, the journey never really ends! Our wedding couples remain firm friends, and we often photograph newborn babies and family get-togethers as the years go on and families grow. One of the most enjoyable parts of the journey is the day you come back to the studio after your honeymoon to re-live the joy of your wedding day at your champagne viewing session. The glasses of bubbly (customised with your names and wedding date for you to take home as a keepsake!) and delicious chocolates will be ready and waiting when you come in.

Relax in our comfortable sofas and enjoy a beautiful slideshow set to music, as all the images from your wedding day are displayed on our crystal-clear wall screen.

After your viewing session, your images will be uploaded to your password-protected online gallery for friends, family and guests to view, and for you to make your final selections for inclusion in your wedding album. We like to give you the opportunity to take your time over this part, and go through your choices together in your own time at home, to make sure everything is absolutely as you want it. There's no pushy hard sell here!

Once you've selected your favourites, you'll then have the option to upgrade the size, cover or material of your wedding book if you wish. We'll then put together a layout design draft for you to approve (or make changes if necessary) before it goes to print. You have control over your album design and it won't go to print until you're 100% delighted with the layout and design.

Our albums are made in Italy and orders usually take around 4 weeks from confirmation to delivery. You can even order smaller versions or copies of the wedding album for parents and guests.

Photography Training Course - West Midlands

Well, a little break from the Wedding Blog Series while our studio is being renovated... more to follow in a couple of weeks.

In the meantime, it's been a very busy month attending lots of bustling wedding fayres (the next one at Chester Doubletree Hilton on 27th February) and meeting lots of fantastic couples planning their weddings for this year and next. It seems Will and Kate have set a trend!

Wedding Photography Blog Series - Part 10: The Big Day (Cake Cutting and First Dance)

The cutting of the cake is a very traditional shot and still used in many wedding albums. Historically, the bride and groom's hands holding the knife should both show off their new wedding rings to the camera. Close-up detail of the cake lends a splash of colour to an album, and can look amazing as part of the page background design in a contemporary storybook wedding album.

Recently, couples have chosen a creative or artistic image of the cake itself in place of the traditional cake-cutting shot. One of the reasons for this is that the cake-cutting photograph is often "staged", as it needs to be taken before the guests enter the room for the wedding breakfast. The real cutting is often carried out by catering staff, especially if the cake is to be served as dessert. If you do wish to pose for a cake-cutting photograph, it's best to set up a "mock" cake-cutting prior to the meal before your guests enter the room. This way the shot will look tidy and you won't have people crowding around with their own cameras distracting you! Later in the evening, your DJ, entertainer or master of ceremonies will announce your first dance - that's if you're brave enough to show off your fancy footwork on the dancefloor! At this point you should be the only couple on the dancefloor. After a couple of minutes parents may join you, followed by the other guests. Choosing a song for your first dance is a very important task as it will always be part of your wedding day memories. For some couples this is easy, if you have an appropriate "special song" that's meaningful to you both. Wedding Photography Blog Series - Part 9: The Big Day (Speeches)

Happy New Year!

If you're planning your wedding in 2011, this multi-part blog series will help with ideas and tips for your big day, especially from a photography perspective!

The speeches are very much looked forward to at a wedding; it's a point in the day when everyone can enjoy a little humour and of course plenty of emotion.

Capturing people's reactions to the speeches are a crucial part of the story of your wedding album, and will evoke some of the strongest memories of the day.

It's also a great way to add a little visual humour to your wedding storybook!

A toastmaster or the best man will sometimes introduce each speech on behalf of the wedding party. Traditionally the father of the bride speaks first, thanking the guests for attending the wedding and welcoming his new son-in-law to the family. He will also acknowledge the support of the groom's parents and may toast them. The bride's father may also tell an amusing or heartwarming anecdote about his daughter or offer advice on married life. Finally, he proposes a toast to the bride and groom.

The groom's speech is historically more serious than the best man's, and should include plenty of complimentary references to his new wife! He will echo the brides's father's thanks to the guests and to both sets of parents. The groom is usually expected to raise a toast to the bridesmaids and thank his ushers and best man.

The best man (and it is becoming increasingly more prevalent to have more than one!) also thanks the bridesmaids and toasts the bride and groom. His speech is often the most humorous but should be lighthearted and not humiliate or embarrass anyone. The best man may also read cards from friends and family unable to attend, and thank the staff at the venue.

It is not unusual, especially in recent years, for other members of the wedding party, or even guests, to say a few words before the cutting of the cake. (As a general rule of etiquette, brides wishing to address their guests should speak after the groom and before the best man.)

During the speeches guests are more relaxed and will be laughing and smiling naturally. There is also a great deal of heartfelt emotion to be captured and it's a brilliant opportunity for candid pictures. At this point of the day I usually switch to a fast zoom lens so that I can stay well out of the way and let the guests forget there's a camera in the room, and of course it's best not to distract those making speeches as they'll probably be nervous enough!

Wedding Photography Blog Series - Part 8: The Big Day (Candid Moments / Telling the Story)

Making the Memories...

A wedding album should tell a story, not just record who was at your wedding. It should convey the atmosphere, the joy and emotion of the day and capture those little moments that make your wedding special and unique.

Not every photograph taken on your wedding day will be a "posed" shot. In fact, most of them won't be. The images that become treasured favourites are almost always the ones that no-one realised had even been taken at the time!

Group shots and bridal couple portraits are great for showing everyone in their finery, looking their best and beautifully lit, with an attractive backdrop. The photographs that depict the dynamics and relationships between people, the warmth of friends and the love for family, cannot be staged and require an observant and attentive photographer.

Sally Marie's style is based on a natural and unobtrusive method of capturing important moments, emotion and expressions of feeling. Like every other aspect of the day's photography, it's important that the couple and their guests feel comfortable in the photographer's presence and are able to relax and be themselves.

This impromptu toast from the groom's workmates was anticipated and captured from a good distance away so as not to intrude on the moment of celebration between friends. It became a favourite choice for the final album!

Whenever there are children at a wedding, you can expect to create some beautiful portraits without resorting to commanding them to "say cheese"! Children are naturally curious and, even when they don't play up for the camera, their fascination of the events around them produces some wonderful expressions.

Of course, sometimes it all gets a bit too much!

The genuine moments that a good wedding photographer can capture, will be treasured for generations to come. Make sure your wedding day story is told by an expert visual storyteller!

Wedding Photography Blog Series - Part 7: The Big Day (Bridal Couple Portraits)

Just the two of us...A classic portrait of the bride and groom is what makes a wedding album. It's what everyone wants to see! There are so many ways to capture the "just married" moments and expressions, and bridal couple portraits can be beautiful, traditional, or quirky... whatever the style they will be one of the most creative elements of your wedding photography.

A good time to take your bridal couple portraits is just after the ceremony. At this point in the day you may want to steal away for ten minutes, sip some champagne, catch your breath and take everything in.

Another option is to do the group shots first, then allow your guests to relax, mingle, chat and get drinks and canapes while you and your photographer find a quiet spot to take your couple portraits.

This needn't take up more than ten minutes of your day (although you can spend as long as you want of course!) and it's at this point I would suggest asking enthusiastic guests with cameras not to follow you for this bit. It's important to create the right mood and, if you're conscious of a dozen cameras and mobile phones pointed in your direction, it can be overwhelming and distracting. The best results are achieved with a few minutes gentle direction from a good photographer, who will put you at ease and make you look your most beautiful.

Many couples choose a second (or third!) location for their bridal couple portraits. If your wedding is taking place near a spot that is meaningful to you, such as a forest or park, consider taking a detour there for some special portraits before the reception.

You will find your bridal couple portraits even more outstanding if you've chosen to do a pre-wedding shoot before the big day, as you'll need less direction and won't feel awkward in front of a camera. If you already know your photographer and trust them, you can forget their presence and enjoy a few minutes of each other's company before the partying begins!

Remember, you don't always need to be looking directly at the camera to achieve stunning portraits!

Wedding Photography Blog Series - Part 6: The Big Day (Group Shots)

All Together Now...

After the ceremony you may want to have a group photograph taken while all your guests are together. This ensures you have at least one image of everyone who attended your special day.

Make sure you allow plenty of time to get everyone organised for the group shot. Ushers can be a great help in speeding things along here by letting everyone know that they are needed for a few minutes for a group photograph. A high window, steps or balcony can provide an excellent vantage point for getting everyone's face in the picture clearly.

Smaller group shots can be as informal or as formal as you like, but remember it can take longer to direct a group of people so limit the number of smaller groups to what is important to YOU the couple - it's your day and your wedding album after all - and don't allow endless combinations of guest groups to compromise images that may be more important to you, such as the shots of the two of you together.

If it helps, make a list of the essential groups and give a copy to an usher or the best man, and a copy to your photographer. Sticking to a set of important group shots will make this part of the day as smooth as possible for you and your guests.

Group shots can be taken indoors or outdoors, and will usually include the bride and groom with each set of parents, immediate family, siblings, and of course a photograph with the bridesmaids and groomsmen.

There is no rule on how traditional these shots need to be, and if you want to inject a little fun and quirkiness to your album then group shots can become a real talking point!

Wedding Photography Blog Series - Part 5: The Big Day (The Ceremony)

The wedding ceremony itself may take place in a religious building or a licenced civil premises, and can vary greatly in terms and content, duration and tone.

One thing is certain, the official marriage ceremony is probably the most important part of the day and most couples will want the main parts of the service to be photographed. Traditionally, for example, the entrance of the bride, exchange of rings and vows, the kiss and the walk down the aisle as husband and wife are all moments that make up the story within a wedding album.

It's important that you check with your minister, registrar or officiant before the wedding day to make sure there are no restrictions on photography during the service. Unfortunately there are a surprising number of photographers out there who still insist on wandering about during the service, getting in the way and causing a distraction, which has understandably left many registrars apprehensive about ceremony photography. There is no need for any of this!

During the ceremony we will stay discreetly to one side and not interfere in any way with official proceedings. For larger wedding celebrations, a second photographer may be present who will remain at the back of the venue to photograph your walk down the aisle together.

There is no valid legal obstacle to the photographing of your marriage ceremony, with the only exception being the signing of the register. The register document cannot be photographed by law, and it is therefore normal to shoot the bride and groom "pretending" to sign a blank page in the register after the real thing has been completed.

The wedding ceremony marks the start of your journey together and is full of significant moments and customs. A creative photographer will turn this into a visual memory conveying the emotion and joy of the entire experience.

Get Ready....

The morning of the big day will most likely be a buzz of activity. It's a huge part of the wedding day story and a part that you'll want to remember.

More and more brides are choosing to have this time documented by their wedding photographer as part of the wedding photography package, and you may want to consider whether this is something you would like to include in your wedding storybook or album.

Some brides like to have the whole preparations photographed, from rollers-and-dressing-gowns through the hair and make up artist's visit to the final transformation in gown and veil.

Other brides prefer a general "before the wedding" feel, with shots of the dress waiting to be put on, details of shoes and flowers, perfume and champagne, which all add a lovely feel and a burst of colour to the eventual album design.

A pre-wedding photo-shoot (often referred as an engagement shoot) is an excellent 'trial run' for your wedding photographs. Many photographers now offer this service as standard and often without charge or obligation, so if you're having difficulty deciding on your wedding photographer a pre-wedding shoot is a great way to experience working with them and seeing how their style suits you first-hand.

Not only is it great practice for you being in front of the camera, it also allows the photographer to see what images and poses work best for you, and what may not.

Sally Marie offers a complimentary pre-wedding shoot to all couples planning their wedding photography. After the pre-wedding shoot...

The images from your engagement / pre-wedding shoot are used to produce customised miniature cards, containing the login details and password for your online wedding album. These cards can be placed on the tables at your wedding breakfast or enclosed with thank you cards to allow guests to view your wedding photographs online.

One one side of each card is one of your pre-wedding shoot pictures, and on the other instructions on how to access your gallery of wedding photographs. The cards can have different images for variety, they don't have to all show the same photograph.

Many photographers offer a pre-wedding shoot to engaged couples, and I'll go into more detail about why this is an excellent opportunity for couples in the next blog, but what else can your photographer do for you?

Chatting with a bride this week at the studio, I asked her how her wedding plans were coming along. "Well, I'm not sure really," she replied. "I don't know how much I'm supposed to have done by this point so I don't know if I'm way behind or well in front!"

She went on to tell me that because she had only ever been to one wedding, some fourteen years ago, she didn't really have a clear picture of how a wedding should look, or how the day is meant to proceed.

This made me realise that for most people, even attending a wedding as a guest is a rare or infrequent occasion. So how can brides be expected to know what sort of chair covers are the most appropriate, how much wine should be on each table, or who is supposed to sit where during the ceremony?

So who better to help with these details than someone who lives weddings every day, and sees all sorts of different types of celebration, different types of ceremony, different types of couple!

As a wedding photographer, for me, it doesn't just begin and end with still images. I have experienced so many other elements of the wedding day it is a pleasure to be able to offer an insight in all things wedding if needed! Brides who have been to the studio for their first meeting will have seen the piles of wedding magazines and stacks of supplier contacts, from wedding stationers to horse and carriages!

Wedding Photography Blog Series - Part 1: Finding YOUR Wedding Photographer

One of the very first stages of planning a wedding, after the date and venue are confirmed, is to select a wedding photographer.

Now I may be slightly biased but it seems to me there are only three tangible elements of your wedding day that will last your whole life. Your dress, your wedding ring, and your photographs.
And of these three, only the photographs can keep every other element of the day alive forever.

Deciding how important your photographs are to you is the first stage in finding your perfect photographer. You only have one chance to create the images that will be a lifelong representation of the day you married each other, and you are effectively trusting your memories into the hands of one photographer. Choose carefully!

The best photographers are usually booked 12 months in advance, especially for Saturdays in June, July and August (although September is quickly becoming an extremely popular month for weddings here in Wales), so the earlier you make your initial enquiry the better chance of booking your first choice.

When you're shopping for your wedding dress, you don't buy the cheapest dress on the rack, so don't make the mistake of opting for the cheapest photographer you can find - the phrase "you get what you pay for" has never been more true than in wedding photography. Instead, search for photographers whose style and portfolios impress you, and contact them to see if they are available on your wedding date. The most professional and reliable photographers will always reply promptly, so take note of how quickly and courteously each of your "shortlist" of photographers returns your call or e-mail.

Next, make an appointment and meet them in person. This is extremely important. You are going to be sharing your wedding day with this person and if they annoy you or you don't like them, it just won't work. The more comfortable and relaxed you are with your photographer, the better and more natural your photographs will be.

Make sure you look through a number of albums showing complete weddings from start to finish. A selection of favourites is fine for a website but you need to be confident that the pictures will be consistently good throughout the day.

Meet the photographer beforehand and make sure you can communicate easily and feel that you can work together comfortably. You have been planning your wedding day for months, if not years, so don't let yourself be bossed around. This is your day.
Make sure your wedding photographer has a contingency system in place for unforeseen events such as illness - you don't want to be left without a photographer on your big day!
Check that your photographer has public liability AND professional indemnity insurance. Saving a few pounds by booking an uninsured amateur isn't worth the risk if you're left with no photographs, or if someone is hurt tripping over their equipment. Someone once said, "if you think an expert is expensive, wait and see what an amateur will cost you." Wise words.
Similarly, don't make your decision based on price alone - if you go for the cheapest option, be prepared to accept cheap results. Your wedding photographs are one of the few elements of this important day that will last forever, long after the cake has been eaten, the guests have gone home and the dress has been packed away in the attic! So make sure you choose a high-quality service from a reputable, established and insured professional.
Choose a wedding photographer who returns phone calls and e-mails promptly and can be tracked down when you need them. A mobile phone number alone isn't enough!
Look at the photographer's previous work and style of photography. Every photographer is different, and you don't want to choose a traditional formal photographer if you want a reportage-style wedding album, and vice versa. Choose someone who specialises in the sort of look you want for your own album.

How to Look Fantastic in Your Wedding Photographs

If there's one day in your life you're going to look absolutely perfect, it's your wedding day. Brides often ask me for advice on how to look slimmer, younger or taller on their wedding photographs and so I've put together a few simple tips for getting the best out of those all-important images.

1. Plan a pampering.
Wedding magazines are full of excellent beauty routines from diets to exercise plans, and the truth is that if you feel great, you'll look great.

Treat yourself to a facial and a manicure (for those close-ups of you exchanging rings or holding your bouquet, good hands and nails will make the photographs look beautifully polished and elegant), book a good make up and hair stylist for the day itself, drink plenty of purifying water and get a good night's sleep.

2. Choose the right dress.
Shopping for your wedding dress is a wonderful and often emotional experience, so take your time and visit a few different wedding dress suppliers.

Bridalwear shops usually offer brilliant advice on what would suit your body shape and style, so you can find a dress that accentuates your best features and shows you off as it should!

Choosing your dress is a huge part of the wedding experience so take along a special friend, Mum or your chief bridesmaid and make it a big event, followed by a well-deserved glass of champagne to celebrate another mission accomplished!

A properly flattering wedding dress will give you the nicest possible shape for your photographs, and a good photographer will help you stand or sit in the most becoming way for the best results.

3. An eye for detail.
Choose a theme for your wedding (again, all part of the fun!) and incorporate it into your table decorations, flowers, invitations etc.

You can get inspiration from other brides by browsing through some wedding magazines – Sally Marie Photography (www.sallymarie.co.uk) has piles of them available for brides to look through at the studio over a cup of coffee, plus we’re on hand to offer a second opinion or suggest ways to expand on your theme ideas.

Putting the attention into the detail of your wedding will enhance the atmosphere of your photographs. It really does make a difference and is worth the extra thought and effort.

A good photographer will capture the details of the day and the nicer these details look, the better the images for your wedding album.

4. Enjoy yourself.
Sounds obvious perhaps, but it’s all too common for brides to get so swept up in making sure everything is meticulous, or trying to please everyone else, that they spend the entire wedding day stressed and harassed.

It’s YOUR day, YOUR way and you only get to enjoy it once! Plan the details of what you want and give yourself plenty of time to arrange everything. Some people can plan a wedding in two months, others need two years so decide how much time you can devote and how long you think you will need personally to arrange everything.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Sally Marie has books of local wedding suppliers and venues which brides are welcome to use to help with planning their wedding.

If you are relaxed and enjoying yourself, your photographs will look relaxed and spontaneous. And if you’re enjoying yourself then your guests will enjoy it too, giving lovely natural expressions all round!

5. Posing.
Most brides dislike the idea of “posed” wedding photographs. It conjures images of stiff rows of suited Victorians, looking very unnatural and uncomfortable, or of outdated pseudo-romantic poses gazing into each other’s eyes.

That being said, a little direction from a good wedding photographer can make an amazing difference to the final photographs. Try a studio session or an engagement shoot to get used to being in front of a camera and let your photographer show you how to stand, or sit, effectively.

Look at pages from bridal magazines and note the way the models hold themselves, then try to re-create your favourite images in front of the mirror. You might feel a little silly at first, but if you look model-perfect in your wedding album photographs it will be worth it!

Think posture. Straighten your back and shoulders so that you don’t look hunched. Stretch your neck up like a swan and then lower your chin slightly – this will slim your face and add grace and elegance to your stance.

If you have a bouquet, hold it around your navel / belly button with your elbows slightly bent. In front of the mirror, try holding the bouquet slightly to one side and swinging your hips out to add glamour.

A good wedding photographer will help you by directing you and your guests rather than posing you artificially. Spend some time with the photographer before the wedding and make sure you are happy with their direction and their style.

6. Choose your wedding photographer carefully.
I’ve saved the most important for last. If there’s one factor that’s going to make the difference between you looking fantastic in your wedding photographs and looking average, it’s the photographer you work with.

Spend time with them and make sure you get on well. If you’re having your wedding-morning preparations photographed, consider whether you would be more comfortable with a female photographer if you and your bridesmaids are going to be rushing around the bedroom in dressing gowns!

Your photographer should listen to your wishes, and add suggestions of their own to get the best results. If you’re not sure, book an engagement photo-shoot to make sure you are comfortable with the photographer and see that you like the style of the images and the way the photographs portray you.

The photographer should be able to direct you into the most naturally flattering poses without being overly bossy.

Ultimately, if you have a good rapport with your photographer then you will look infinitely more relaxed and natural in your wedding photographs. A good photographer will help you get the most flattering results with minimal interference on the day itself.

Pre-Wedding and Engagement Photoshoots

What an amazing weekend it's been across the country. I spent Saturday afternoon in a pretty village in Warwickshire with a fantastic couple whose wedding I'll be photographing next month.

Admittedly most of our time was spent enjoying a chat about the wedding in the beautiful sunshine, but we also took ten minutes to set up a few shots and give Will and Jen a taste of being in front of the camera.

As you can see, they had no reason to worry and after just a few minutes were completely relaxed and enjoying the whole experience. This is an element of wedding photography that is often overlooked. If you have trust and confidence in your photographer, your belief in having your photograph taken as an unpleasant experience will completely change. We had such fun on Saturday that the bride, groom and myself are all thoroughly excited about the photographs on the day. That's the difference! They are now actually looking forward to having their pictures taken which is exactly how it should be.

On top of that, having shown Jenny and Will a few simple posing tricks, there is no need for me to take up any unnecessary time on their big day.

Pre-wedding shoots are by far the best way to make sure you are choosing the right photographer for you. You need to have a good rapport, be able to communicate with each other and most importantly, they should instill you with confidence in their ability to make you look your absolute best.

What is Lifestyle Photography?

Lifestyle photography is a contemporary form of portrait photography. Its most common use refers to informal, natural-looking images of families, children or individuals.

Lifestyle photo-shoots are usually carried out "on location" outdoors, making use of natural scenery, unusual backdrops or even industrial settings. They may also take place around the home of the person or family being photographed.

The Cariad Collection is a Lifestyle photography package which has been developed especially for women. As a photographer I constantly hear people tell me that they "don't take a good photograph" or "always look awful in pictures". Let me tell you now that EVERYONE CAN LOOK FANTASTIC IN A PHOTOGRAPH. Chester Wedding Feedback - A Great Result!

Wow!

The Chester wedding event was great fun. I had expected lots of wedding photographers but there was quite a good spread of different wedding services, so it wasn't all wedding photography chat!

Looking forward to building some great new relationships and of course shooting lots of beautiful weddings in Chester.

Chester Wedding Event

What a fabulous month we're having here in beautiful Snowdonia. With the traditional exception of the Bank Holiday weekend, the days have been warm and mild, with the bluest of blue skies!

A perfect month for the lifestyle shoots we've currently got booked... images to follow. And of course, for amazing Spring weddings.

I'm looking forward to attending a special networking event in Chester tomorrow evening, which is just for wedding-related businesses. It's always fascinating to meet people from other areas of the wedding world, not only because I learn so much from them, but also because it's useful to stay in touch and to be able to refer prospective brides to those offering the best services and products.

At the studio is a box containing samples and details for all sorts of other wedding suppliers. I am often requested to recommend wedding services from DJs to wedding dresses! Tomorrow's event in Chester will give me the opportunity to meet even more talented local wedding suppliers and experience their level of quality, so that brides in the Chester area can be sure of the best possible value for their wedding bucks.

Natural Family Portraits

Even in a studio setting, family portraits don't have to be formal and boring. Relaxed, happy portrait photographs are achievable, as long as the family is at ease with the photographer.

Elaine's family came into the studio in Gwynedd for some portrait photographs with their young children, and we all had a great time. When everyone is happily having fun the results can be really superb, and after a very short time it was easy to forget about the camera and lights!

We started off with everyone on the floor and asked the kids to climb on the adults, much to the children's delight!
With everyone still sitting on the floor, a fit of giggles lightens everybody and creates some lovely natural expressions. It's not always necessary for everyone to look towards the camera, in fact it's much more informal when the family is interacting together and the dynamics of their personalities can shine through.

Ruth and Ruby are wonderfully tolerant of my bad jokes, and Ruby could easily be set for a career as a model with her fabulous flame-haired looks!

Towards the end of the shoot everyone has forgotten all about my camera, and some wonderfully touching moments are caught as they interact closely together as a family.

Winter Wedding at Penmaenuchaf Hall, Dolgellau

The week before Christmas saw some beautiful snowy weather around Penmaenpool, Dolgellau in stunning southern Snowdonia.

Although on the day of Leanne and Richard's wedding at Penmaenuchaf Hall Hotel the grey skies held only rain showers, we still had lots of fun and even got everyone outside for a group shot (complete with umbrellas galore!)

Winter weddings are fantastic for rich, atmospheric photographs with low light creating a wonderful sense of mood. Here are a few personal favourites from this particular winter wedding:

Wedding Fayre Weekend

What an amazing weekend!

Ruthin Castle is a true fairytale wedding venue, with its 13th Century history and authentic (ish!) mediaeval banquets.

So many excited brides planning their dream wedding day, it was really lovely to hear everyone's wedding plans for the next few years. We had several booking requests over the weekend and look forward to filling up that 2012 calendar!

I've also just been asked to present a wedding photography showcase at Craflwyn in Beddgelert, where a wedding fayre is being held on 21st March - can't wait for that one. It's a National Trust property and Beddgelert has some of the most stunning scenery in Snowdonia (and probably the world!)

It's a busy week ahead meeting with brides for 2011, sending out wedding photography brochures and a couple of lifestyle photo-shoots.

Happy New Year!

2009 was a remarkable year, bringing as it did such challenges, changes and innovations. It was also a year of making new friends and I am very much looking forward to working with them all in the year to come!

2010 has already hit the ground running, with preparations taking place for the 2-day wedding fayre extravaganza at Ruthin castle on the 23rd and 24th January - coinciding with the launch of a whole new service within our wedding photography range.

We are also gearing up for wedding fayres in Wrexham and Llangollen, and with the first wedding of many this year taking place in February, it looks like 2010 is going to be our busiest and most exciting year yet!

I also wanted to share this card which was sent to me by one of my 2009 brides this week; I was so pleased to read her comments and think it's important to tell the world when something nice happens, not keep it to myself, so here we are:

Family and Children's Portraits

Anyone who follows my work on Facebook will probably have already seen these images, but I did say that I would post the photographs from a family photo-shoot and here they are!

Now I may be a little biased here, seeing as these beautiful children pictured are my own nephew and niece, but they did very well at the studio, enjoying their photo-shoot and generally having a great time.

My nephew Finley has been more than comfortable in front of the camera since he was less than a day old, and now appears equally at home behind the camera too, setting out his toys and "posing" them for his own photographs. I may have an heir in the making!

Maddison is no stranger to the lens either and at only 7 months old makes a wonderful subject to photograph with her big beaming smile.

Ruthin Castle wedding fayre

I've just confirmed attendance at Ruthin Castle wedding fayre and fashion show, 23rd and 24th January 2010. I will be exhibiting lifestyle and wedding photography, of course, but there's always so much to see, not only amazing wedding photographs but flowers, cars, cakes, and dozens of beautiful dresses!

Based on previous years I've found this location to be an excellent venue for its wedding fayres and fashion shows, and am really looking forward to the new 2-day format! A whole weekend chatting to brides-to-be (and grooms, and mums etc!) about all things wedding - fantastic!

December is traditionally a very busy month for me, and it seems this December will be even more so, as I'll be busy refining exhibition materials and ordering fabulous new sample albums and display products - it's all so exciting, I can't wait!

Siobhan and Charlie's Wedding at the Conrah Hotel, Aberystwyth

Charlie and Siobhan, both artists from London, held their wedding at the Conrah Hotel, Aberystwyth last month.

The tone of the day was very much relaxed and informal, and the couple requested mostly candid, unposed shots capturing the guests expressions as they enjoyed the day. Featuring probably the most colourful wedding cake ever, it was a beautiful day and everyone had a fabulous time.

Wedding Thank Yous

I've just received a great note from the parents of a groom whose wedding I had the privilege of photographing in July. They enclosed this picture, which they took as I was setting up the big group shot:

Well, when you're a 5'0 photographer sometimes you have to improvise!

I love the thank you letters from my brides and grooms. Some of them go onto the website at http://www.sallymarie.co.uk/ as client testimonials, but some of them I just like to keep as a little reminder of how much my job means, not just to me but to so many other people's lives.

So this post is, in my own sentimental way, a quick "thank you for the thank yous" - that are a big part of the adventure that is being a photographer. It's awesome!

My Week In Pictures

A few images from Tuesday's shoot with Brett Harkness. Just goes to show that rain doesn't necessarily have to stop play, it can be a perfect excuse to get really creative, especially at a wedding.

These were taken in a very industrial setting around a mill yard, and I'm pleased with the funky results. You really don't need jaw-dropping locations to create amazing, individual portraits. Just a little imagination and a clever eye.

Blog-raphy - an introduction

Welcome to my blog!

Firstly I'd like to explain what prompted me to start a blog today.

I've spent the last three days at the Annabel Williams studio in Cumbria surrounded by fellow photographers (including the very cool Crash Taylor, recently named one of the top 10 wedding photographers of our time and a thoroughly great bloke!)

They were a really inspirational bunch and it's been a brilliant opportunity for me to mingle with these people and share ideas and stories. That's one of the great things about photography - you never stop learning, no matter where you are in the industry, no matter how many awards you've won and how much experience you've had. For me, the day I stop learning is the day I hang up my camera.

So, a lot of these photographers were talking about blogs, and the way they use them within their business and as a communications tool, and it struck me as a fantastic way to keep friends, family, customers and prospective customers up to date with my work, my plans and my photography life in general.

I should, perhaps, have read a few other peoples' blogs before starting this. I don't even know if I'm doing it "properly". But I was just too excited to wait. I will have a look at some of the others when I've finished typing this, and see what everyone else thought of this week.

I've come away from this week with a head full of new ideas, and Sally Marie Photography Ltd is going to be heading for some exciting changes in the very near future. My intention for tomorrow is to sit with a laptop and a good coffee, somewhere pleasant, and type up all these new plans. I can't wait to get started and I'll keep this blog updated with each new idea as I start to put them into place.

I would also like to use this blog as a rough wedding guide, with ideas and stories from the weddings I photograph throughout the year which could help brides planning their own wedding. As always, feedback would be extremely valuable so please tell me your thoughts and I will do my best to keep this blog packed with information that's useful, interesting and personal.
